Violent Hailstorm Strikes L’Arbresle, West of Lyon

L’Arbresle, May 6, 2026 – A powerful and highly localized hailstorm swept through L’Arbresle and its surrounding areas, located west of Lyon, on Tuesday afternoon, May 5th. The severe weather event, characterized by significant hailstones, was part of intense thunderstorms that impacted the Rhône department.

Localized Impact and Visual Evidence

The hailstorm, which occurred around L’Arbresle, was particularly strong in this specific sector. Images shared by Lyon Météo on social media platforms depicted the intensity of the event. One resident was photographed holding hands full of small hailstones that had fallen at their home, illustrating the volume and size of the precipitation.

Romain Weber, director of Lyon Météo, a specialized local weather forecasting site, confirmed the localized nature of the storm, stating, “The storm was localized.” The impact was also felt in nearby areas such as Bessenay, where additional images were shared, showcasing the extent of the hailstones.

Weather Forecast: More Storms Expected

Following Tuesday’s severe weather, further thunderstorms are anticipated across the entire Rhône department, including Lyon and its metropolitan communes, on Wednesday afternoon, May 6th. Météo France has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, effective from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Wednesday.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the weather conditions may continue to be unstable. The localized nature of these storms means that while some areas may experience heavy rainfall and hail, others might remain unaffected.

Authorities and weather services will continue to monitor the situation closely, providing updates as new information becomes available. The focus remains on ensuring public safety and minimizing potential disruptions caused by the inclement weather.
