GoVolta to Launch Low-Cost Paris-Amsterdam Train Service by Late 2026, Challenging Eurostar
Paris, May 18, 2026 – A new low-cost train service is set to connect Paris and Amsterdam by late 2026, introduced by the Dutch startup GoVolta. This new offering aims to directly compete with Eurostar, providing a more affordable travel option, albeit with longer journey times and optional paid services onboard. Tickets are expected to range from 20 to 50 euros.
A New Competitor in the European Rail Market
GoVolta plans to operate a daily round trip between Amsterdam and Paris. The company hopes to launch its first trains by the end of 2026, offering significantly lower fares than existing high-speed services. This initiative follows the successful launch of a similar GoVolta service between Amsterdam and Berlin two months prior, and complements European Sleeper’s recently relaunched night train services between Paris and Berlin.
The startup’s strategy involves utilizing refurbished former Belgian trains, leased from a specialized maintenance and safety company. This approach allows GoVolta to keep operational costs down and pass the savings on to passengers.
Longer Journeys, Optional Services
While more economical, GoVolta’s trains will have a longer travel time of nearly six hours, compared to approximately 3 hours and 20 minutes on high-speed trains. The route will include nine stops in total, with two in France: Longueau, near Amiens, and Arras.
To maintain its low-cost model, GoVolta will offer all onboard services as optional extras. This includes charges for larger luggage, allowing passengers to customize their travel experience based on their needs and budget. This model targets travelers who prioritize affordability and have more flexibility in their schedules.
Addressing a Different Market Segment
This new service is expected to appeal to a different segment of the travel market than Eurostar. GoVolta aims to attract passengers looking for budget-friendly options and who are willing to spend more time traveling to save money. This contrasts with Eurostar’s focus on speed and premium services.
The introduction of GoVolta’s Paris-Amsterdam route signifies a growing trend in Europe towards more diversified and accessible rail travel options, mirroring the evolution seen in the airline industry with the rise of low-cost carriers.
The startup’s previous success with the Amsterdam-Berlin route suggests a strong demand for affordable train travel across Europe.
