Widespread Investigation into Child Abuse Allegations in Paris Schools
Paris, May 22 – Sixteen individuals were taken into police custody on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, by the Child Protection Brigade in Paris. These individuals, including animators, specialized maternal school agents (ASEM), and city educational managers (REV), are suspected of inappropriate behavior with children under their supervision in schools within the 7th arrondissement.
This major operation follows an announcement by Paris Public Prosecutor Laure Beccuau on Sunday, May 17, that the Paris public prosecutor’s office had opened multiple investigations into possible violence in a total of 84 nursery schools, around twenty elementary schools, and ten crèches. The current arrests are part of this broader, far-reaching inquiry.
Details of the Arrested Individuals and Allegations
The 16 individuals placed in custody are part of “various investigations directed by the Paris public prosecutor’s office, in connection with the extracurricular activities of the Saint-Dominique, Rapp, and La Rochefoucauld schools.” These schools share extracurricular services with varying frequencies.
Among the 16 suspects, three are ASEM, three are REV, and ten are animators on contract. Their ages range from 18 to 68, born between January 1958 and October 2007. According to a police source, there is an approximate equal number of men and women, or possibly more women, among the arrested. Eleven individuals were apprehended at their homes, while five were summoned for questioning. Investigators are currently examining their phones and computer equipment.
The Paris public prosecutor’s office stated that “these investigations were opened following complaints for acts of varying nature and severity, some alleging rape, others sexual assault or sexual exhibition, and still others describing excessive gestures or behaviors that could be classified as violence.” It was also noted that “some of these complaints were filed after the broadcast of the ‘Cash investigation’ program on January 29, 2026, which led to numerous questions from parents.” The program reportedly revealed incidents that had not previously been brought to the attention of investigators.
Collective Voices Relief and Concern
The SOS Periscolaire collective reacted to the arrests in a statement released on Wednesday evening, stating, “We note that things are finally starting to move forward. We want to believe that justice will shed full light on these facts and establish responsibilities.”
The collective expressed relief at the progress of the investigation and the concrete measures being taken. They also indicated that they would consult with their lawyers and await the outcome of the detentions before commenting further. However, they remain deeply concerned about the future, given the very low number of such cases that result in convictions. The collective also deplored the lack of information from institutions, which continues to leave families in uncertainty and anguish.
Ongoing Investigations and Legal Proceedings
On Wednesday evening, May 20, the Paris public prosecutor’s office ordered the extension of the custody for all 16 suspects. Interrogations continued throughout Thursday. Several of the individuals suspected of the aforementioned offenses could be brought before a judge on Friday, May 22. As of 7:30 PM on Thursday, the Paris public prosecutor’s office had not issued any further communications.
This scandal underscores a broader wave of concern regarding sexual violence and inappropriate behavior within extracurricular settings, with similar incidents and investigations occurring across various regions.
