Paris, May 25 – Seventeen of the 65 individuals taken into custody following violent incidents on Thursday night in Paris, involving OGC Nice supporters, will be presented to an investigating judge, according to the public prosecutor’s office on Sunday. The clashes left seven people injured, with one person still in critical condition as of Saturday evening.
Judicial Investigation Launched for Aggravated Violence
A judicial investigation has been opened for aggravated voluntary violence, specifically for the use of a weapon and the commission of acts in a group, as stated by the Paris public prosecutor’s office. The altercation, which took place near the Canal Saint-Martin, involved several groups of supporters.
Details of the Violent Encounter
On Thursday, around 11:30 PM, approximately one hundred Nice supporters gathered in the 10th arrondissement of the capital, “clearly seeking confrontation,” according to the police prefecture. After moving along the Canal Saint-Martin, a fight erupted on Quai de Valmy. One man, identified as a Parisian hooligan by a source close to the case, sustained severe injuries.
Laurent Nuñez, the Minister of the Interior, described the incident on Friday as a “confrontation between ultra groups,” specifically Nice supporters, “probably reinforced” by Nancy supporters, against Parisians. The Paris prosecutor’s office reported that among the victims, three were hospitalized in “absolute emergency” on the night of the events, including the critically injured individual.
Legal Proceedings and Recovered Evidence
In addition to the 17 individuals being presented to an investigating magistrate, seven others will be tried through immediate appearance. Eight more will be referred for placement under judicial supervision before appearing before the criminal court. Among the 65 people initially taken into custody, five are minors, the Paris prosecutor’s office added.
At the scene of the arrests, authorities recovered reinforced gloves, mouthguards, and balaclavas bearing the OGC Nice club emblem. Videos circulating on social media show masked individuals attacking a local bar, L’Atmosphère, notably throwing chairs at its facade.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
The investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the events and the responsibilities of those involved. The violence has raised concerns about public safety and the behavior of football fan groups. Local residents expressed shock and concern over the disruption caused by the clashes in a usually peaceful neighborhood.
The incident highlights the persistent issue of football hooliganism and the challenges faced by authorities in managing large gatherings of passionate, and sometimes aggressive, fan groups. The swift response by law enforcement and the subsequent judicial actions underscore the seriousness with which such acts of violence are being treated.
The critically injured individual remains under medical care, and updates on their condition are awaited. The legal proceedings for the implicated individuals are expected to shed more light on the motivations and organization behind the violent confrontation.
