Fourvière Tunnel in Lyon to Close for Final Weekend of Maintenance

Lyon, May 28, 2026 – The Fourvière Tunnel, a critical artery in Lyon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France, is scheduled for its final weekend closure due to ongoing maintenance work. Commuters will need to use alternative routes from Friday, May 29th, at 10 PM until Monday, June 1st, at 6 AM.

Final Stretch of Works

The maintenance operations, which commenced at the beginning of May, are entering their conclusive phase. According to Morgan Couturier, a journalist with Lyon People, this weekend will be the last affected by the extensive work being carried out within the Fourvière Tunnel and the Perrache road tunnels.

“The worst is not yet behind them, but motorists can be reassured by saying that this weekend will be the last affected by the maintenance work carried out in the Fourvière tunnel and in the Perrache road tunnels,” stated Couturier.

As previously announced, despite significant progress, the tunnel will remain inaccessible during these hours. This closure will conclude a period of considerable disruption for motorists, who have been forced to rely on alternative transit routes located to the east of the city.

Viaduct Reopens, Tunnel Closes

In contrast to the tunnel’s closure, users of the A7 motorway may have noticed that the viaduct connecting Pierre-Bénite to Saint-Fons, in the Lyon/Marseille direction, reopened last Sunday. This provides some relief for traffic flow in that particular corridor.

Drivers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and allow for extra travel time. Local authorities have suggested using alternative routes to minimize congestion. This weekend’s closure is expected to be the last major disruption before the full reopening of the tunnel.

Impact on Commuters

The series of closures has had a noticeable impact on daily commutes and weekend travel plans for thousands of residents and visitors to Lyon. The Fourvière Tunnel is a vital link, and its temporary unavailability necessitates careful planning to avoid delays.

Authorities have been urging residents to stay informed through local news and traffic updates. The goal of these maintenance works is to ensure the long-term safety and efficiency of these critical infrastructure components.

This final closure is a necessary step to complete the maintenance and ensure the tunnel’s continued operational integrity. Once reopened, the tunnel is expected to provide smoother and safer passage for all road users.
