Lyon, June 6 – The Japanese retail chain Muji has ceased operations at its largest French store, located within the Westfield Part-Dieu shopping center in Lyon. The closure, which occurred discreetly at the end of May, paves the way for a new, expansive Zara store, set to occupy 4,000 square meters across two floors.
Muji’s Five-Year Run in Lyon Comes to an End
Muji, known for its minimalist and unbranded products ranging from clothing to home goods, had been a fixture in the Part-Dieu center for five years. The 1,300 square meter store, which was the brand’s largest in France, originally opened in 2021 after relocating from the Confluence shopping center. Despite its prominent location and extensive offering, the concept “did not take off” in Lyon, according to local reports.
The last customers were served on May 28, after which large white panels covered the two-story boutique. While Muji is exiting Lyon, the brand, founded in Japan in 1980, continues to focus on the French market, with a new store slated to open on the prestigious Rue de Rivoli in Paris by the end of 2026.
Zara to Consolidate and Expand Its Presence
The successor to Muji has already been confirmed as the Spanish fashion giant Zara. The announcement, made on April 1, revealed plans for an immense new store that will not only replace Muji but also absorb the spaces previously occupied by Boss and The Kooples, which had closed earlier.
The new Zara location will consolidate its men’s and women’s collections, which are currently housed in separate stores within the shopping center. Construction is scheduled to commence this month, June 2026, with an official opening projected for 2027.
Revitalizing “La Lanterne” Extension
The arrival of the flagship Zara store is highly anticipated, particularly for the “La Lanterne” extension of the Part-Dieu center, which has struggled since its launch in 2020. Several brands have departed the extension over the past few years. However, a number of international retailers continue to operate there, including Hollister, Dyson, Nespresso, Abercrombie & Fitch, Victoria’s Secret, Uniqlo, and Dior.
