Lyon, June 19, 2026 – A tragic accident occurred on Friday morning at the Masséna metro station in Lyon, resulting in the death of a 50-year-old blind man. The man reportedly fell onto the tracks of Metro Line A while searching for an exit, according to preliminary reports.

Tragic Accident at Masséna Station

The incident took place shortly before 11:00 AM at the Masséna station, located in the 6th arrondissement of Lyon. Emergency services, including ten fire engines and 27 firefighters from Rhône, were dispatched to the scene. Despite their rapid intervention, the victim could not be saved.

According to a security source, the visually impaired man, who was equipped with a cane, fell onto the tracks. Initial findings suggest that he may not have identified the safety limit marked by tactile paving, leading to his fall. The Sytral, Lyon’s public transport authority, confirmed these details in a statement released later in the day.

Investigations Underway to Determine Causes

An investigation has been launched by the police to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. At this stage, the possibility of an accidental fall is being prioritized, with no metro train reported to be involved in the immediate incident. The TCL (Transports en Commun Lyonnais) is also conducting its own internal inquiry into the matter.

Véronique Sarselli, President of the Métropole de Lyon and Sytral, expressed her profound emotion and offered her sincere condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones in a press release. “This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time,” she stated.

Disruption to Metro Services

The incident led to the immediate suspension of service on Metro Line A. The line remained closed until 12:45 PM to allow emergency personnel and law enforcement to conduct their operations. This disruption affected numerous commuters during the late morning hours.

The death of the 50-year-old man highlights the ongoing challenges faced by visually impaired individuals in navigating public transport systems. Authorities are expected to review safety protocols and accessibility features at metro stations in light of this tragic event.

Community Reaction and Calls for Enhanced Safety

The news of the man’s death has prompted reactions from the community, with many expressing shock and sadness. There are growing calls for enhanced safety measures and improved accessibility for people with disabilities within Lyon’s public transportation network. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of continuous evaluation and improvement of urban infrastructure to ensure the safety of all citizens.

Further details are expected to emerge as the investigations progress. The identity of the victim has not yet been released to the public.
