Bron, Lyon: New Shopping Center with 80 Boutiques Nears Completion
Bron, June 29 – The construction of a new shopping center in Bron, at the entrance to Lyon, is entering its final phase. The complex, which includes a renovated Galeries Lafayette, is set to feature approximately 80 boutiques, a diverse range of restaurants, and other amenities, marking a significant urban transformation for the area.
A Strategic Location Undergoing Transformation
The project is centered around the Galeries Lafayette store in Mermoz-Pinel, which, despite its aging infrastructure, was identified as the top-performing Galeries Lafayette in France (outside Boulevard Haussmann in Paris) in terms of conversion rate in 2024. Its strategic location at the entrance to Lyon, well-served by tram and metro lines, has been a key factor in its success.
The revitalization of the site, which began in 2020, is a substantial investment exceeding 100 million euros, spearheaded by the Galeries Lafayette group and the investment fund Keys REIM. The redevelopment follows a broader urban renewal of the Mermoz area, which saw the demolition of an overpass in 2010 and the arrival of the tramway in 2019.
Expanded Retail and Dining Options
While the Galeries Lafayette store itself will reduce its footprint from 26,000 m² to 13,000 m², the overall complex will expand significantly, growing from 26,000 m² to 37,000 m². This expansion will accommodate around 80 new boutiques, a considerable increase from the previous offerings which included only a Monoprix, a pharmacy, a bank, and a tobacco shop alongside Galeries Lafayette.
A primary focus of the new development is to enhance the dining experience, which was previously lacking. Marine-Axelle Blaise, project director at Citynove, the group’s real estate company, stated that more than a dozen restaurants are expected. Confirmed eateries include Berliner, B&W Burger, and Pokawa, along with the caterer Casa Risi and the chocolatier Voisin.
Among the major retail brands already announced are ‘Normal,’ a discount product retailer, and ‘On Air,’ a sports club, both confirming their upcoming openings.
Construction in Two Phases
The construction, carried out on an occupied site, has been executed in two main phases. The initial phase involved extending the complex in all directions, utilizing former parking areas. This included a new main entrance to the west, a restaurant area above the Sytral park-and-ride facility to the south, a new parking silo at the rear, and a new building to the east housing the new Galeries Lafayette store.
The Galeries Lafayette store relocated in October 2024, allowing the second phase to commence. This involved the asbestos removal, stripping, and re-architecting of the old building. This space will now house a two-level shopping center, complete with an event plaza on the upper floor designed for concerts and stand-up performances. Additionally, some local shops will have direct access from Boulevard Pinel.
Anticipated Impact and Future Outlook
The completion of this project is expected to rejuvenate and diversify the retail and leisure offerings in Bron, significantly enhancing the appeal of the area for residents and visitors alike. The comprehensive development aims to create a vibrant hub that caters to a wide range of consumer needs, from fashion and dining to entertainment and convenience.
