Paris, July 8, 2026 – The Grand Paris Express project is making significant strides, with the highly anticipated Line 18 poised to open a new section by the end of the year. This expansion will connect Massy-Palaiseau and Orly Airport, promising to revolutionize travel across the Île-de-France region with unprecedented speeds.
Line 18: A New Era of Rapid Transit
The Grand Paris Express, a monumental infrastructure project, aims to significantly enhance public transportation in the Île-de-France region by 2027. Among its various developments, Line 18 stands out, particularly for its impressive speed capabilities. The new section, which will link Massy-Palaiseau to Orly Airport, is expected to operate at speeds reaching up to 110 km/h.
The construction of Line 18 is progressing in three phases. The segment between Massy-Palaiseau and Christ-de-Salay was completed in 2026. The crucial connection between Massy-Palaiseau and Orly Airport is slated for completion in 2027, while the final extension from Christ de Saclay to Versailles-Chantiers is anticipated by 2030. This strategic route is designed to serve isolated areas, including key technological hubs like the Saclay plateau.
Once fully operational, Line 18 will enable passengers to travel from Paris-Orly Airport to Versailles in approximately 30 minutes, incorporating 10 new stations. This will substantially improve connectivity in Essonne and, notably, in Yvelines, as it will be the only Parisian metro line to serve this department with three stations.
Record-Breaking Speed for Parisian Metro
Line 18 is generating considerable excitement due to its record-breaking speed. While the trains are expected to average between 55 to 65 km/h, they will be capable of reaching a maximum of 110 km/h. This far surpasses Line 14, previously considered the fastest in the network, which tops out at 30 km/h. This makes Line 18 the second-fastest metro system globally, trailing only Guangzhou’s metro in China, which reaches 135 km/h. This remarkable speed is partly attributed to Line 18’s dedicated rolling stock, featuring an iron wheel system and automatic driving technology, utilizing three distinct rails.
The Broader Vision of Grand Paris Express
Beyond Line 18, the Grand Paris Express project for 2027 includes the inauguration of several other metro lines to further develop public transport in Île-de-France. Line 15 South will connect Pont de Sèvres and Noisy-Champs. The first section of Line 16 will run from Saint-Denis-Pleyel to Clichy-Montfermeil, and Line 17 will extend from Saint-Denis-Pleyel to Le Bourget Airport.
By 2030, the overarching goal is to foster the development of new regional districts while facilitating travel between suburbs, especially those not yet integrated into the existing network. Ultimately, the Grand Paris Express envisions the creation of four new metro lines (15, 16, 17, 18), the extension of Line 14 to Paris-Orly Airport, the construction of 68 new stations, and 200 km of new track.
This ambitious project is set to transform urban mobility in the greater Paris area, offering faster, more efficient, and better-connected public transport options for millions of residents and visitors.
