Lyon, July 10 – Private ambulance drivers in Lyon are staging a major protest this Friday, July 10, to highlight their economic struggles and perceived government inaction. Four federations representing the sector have organized convoys that will converge on the 3rd arrondissement of Lyon, leading to significant traffic disruptions, particularly on routes used by holidaymakers.
Widespread Mobilization Across France
This demonstration follows several similar actions in other French cities in recent weeks. The private ambulance sector is calling for a new day of mobilization in Lyon to press their demands. Convoys are scheduled to depart from three major highway points: Beynost on the A42, Solaize on the A7, and Limas on the A6. Their ultimate destination is the regional health agency (ARS) headquarters on Rue Garibaldi in Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement.
Traffic Chaos Anticipated on Busy Holiday Routes
Organizers have warned of potential traffic jams and delays, especially as this Friday has been classified as a ‘black’ day by Bison Futé, indicating heavy holiday traffic. This convergence of protest and peak travel is expected to create considerable inconvenience for commuters and vacationers alike.
Why Are Ambulance Drivers Protesting?
The core of the protest stems from a combination of decreasing revenues and rising operational costs. According to the federations, certain medical transport services are being prescribed less frequently due to efforts to control healthcare spending by the Assurance maladie. Simultaneously, ambulance companies are grappling with soaring expenses, including fuel, energy, medical supplies, vehicle maintenance, and salaries.
This widening gap between income and expenditure is severely impacting the financial stability of many ambulance companies, leading to fears of widespread closures.

The federations fear that without additional measures, some ambulance companies could cease operations in the coming months. Such closures would significantly complicate the provision of essential medical transport for patients requiring specialized or adapted services, potentially jeopardizing public health.

In response to concerns raised in the Senate, Health Minister Stéphanie Rist affirmed that several measures are already underway. These include financial aid for high-mileage vehicles to offset fuel costs, as well as initiatives to reduce payment delays from hospitals and decrease waiting times in emergency departments. However, the protesting ambulance drivers clearly believe these measures are insufficient to address the depth of their economic challenges.
