Six Forests Less Than an Hour from Paris for a Weekend Escape
Paris, July 21, 2026 – Île-de-France is rich in forests, offering numerous opportunities to connect with nature. For those seeking a change from the usual walks around the Bois de Vincennes or Bois de Boulogne, here are six exceptional forests, all located less than an hour from Paris, perfect for a refreshing weekend getaway.
Rambouillet Forest: A Vast Natural Haven
Less than an hour from Paris, the Rambouillet Forest spans an impressive 14,000 hectares of undergrowth, dotted with serene ponds. It ranks as the second most frequented forest in Île-de-France, after Fontainebleau. Despite its popularity, it still offers tranquil spots away from the well-trodden paths. For a first visit, the loop around the Étangs de Hollande (Holland Ponds), accessible on foot from Le Perray train station, is highly recommended.
Sénart Forest: History and Ancient Oaks
The Sénart Forest extends over approximately 3,000 hectares, nestled between the Seine and Yerres valleys, about thirty kilometers south of Paris. A suggested starting point is the Faisanderie d’Étiolles, an 18th-century former hunting lodge at the heart of the woods. From there, visitors can walk to the Carrefour des Quatre Chênes (Crossroads of the Four Oaks), where one of the oak trees boasts an age of over 500 years.
Saint-Germain-en-Laye Forest: Royal History and Panoramic Views
Once a royal hunting ground, this 3,500-hectare forest combines grand, shaded avenues with a rich history of France. A must-see is the Grande Terrasse, designed by Le Nôtre. This 2.4 km long terrace is lined with linden trees and offers spectacular views of the Seine valley and western Paris. It is easily accessible by RER A from Paris, by alighting at Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
Montmorency Forest: Rousseau’s Retreat
Perched on a hill north of Paris, the Montmorency Forest covers 2,200 hectares and attracts over 5 million visitors annually. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a frequent visitor here, and “Le chemin du philosophe” (The Philosopher’s Path) – named in his memory – is a trail marked with eleven stages, blending nature and local history. Access is available via Transilien from Gare du Nord.
Meudon Forest: Close to the City, Rich in Surprises
Just six kilometers from the Parisian ring road, the Meudon Forest stretches over 1,100 hectares. With its ponds and steep paths, it offers new discoveries with each visit. A notable site here is Hangar Y, a former airship hangar repurposed into a cultural space, nestled deep within the trees. To reach it, take the RER C and get off at Meudon-Val Fleuri.
Ferrières Forest: A Hidden Gem with Giant Sequoias
The most understated of the selection, the Ferrières Forest, covers 3,157 hectares and is situated 24 km from the capital, on the northwestern edge of the Brie plateau. Formerly owned by the Rothschild family, it is home to the Château de Ferrières and nearly 95 species of birds. For a walk, start from the Étang de la Taffarette (Taffarette Pond), then follow the castle gates before joining the Allée des Lions (Lions’ Alley), with its 96 giant sequoias.
These forests provide excellent opportunities for Parisians and visitors alike to escape the urban bustle and immerse themselves in nature, all within a short distance of the city.
