Shooting in Villeurbanne: Man Critically Injured Near City Hall, Suspect at Large

According to initial reports, law enforcement was alerted shortly after 2:00 AM regarding a shooting at the intersection of Aristide-Briand Avenue and Paul-Verlaine Street, directly in front of the City Hall. Emergency services, including firefighters and Samu 69, quickly arrived at the scene.
A man in his twenties, who had sustained at least one gunshot wound, was immediately taken care of. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition, specifically to the resuscitation unit, as confirmed by a source close to the investigation. His vital prognosis was engaged due to a shot that had traversed his body.
Victim Known to Police, Suspect on Electric Scooter
Early findings shared with actu Lyon indicate that the victim, born in Algeria, was already known to the police for offenses related to drug trafficking.
A large number of police officers were deployed to the area in an urgent attempt to apprehend the shooter. The individual is believed to have arrived at the scene on an electric scooter before opening fire. Two shell casings were reportedly found at the location as part of the initial observations.
Investigation Underway, Mayor Condemns Violence
The Lyon prosecutor’s office has confirmed the details and stated that the victim remains hospitalized. An investigation for attempted murder has been immediately opened by the Lyon judicial authorities. The investigations, entrusted to the interdepartmental directorate of the national police (DIPN) of the Rhône, aim to “determine the circumstances and motives of these acts and to identify the perpetrator(s).”
The mayor of Villeurbanne, Cédric Van Styvendael (PS), speaking to actu Lyon, “condemned this unacceptable violence which once again reminds us of the urgent need to strengthen security measures in our territory.” He added that he had already “discussed the matter with the prefect, who assured that additional national police forces would be deployed,” and that the City had “provided video surveillance footage that is currently being exploited.” Mayor Van Styvendael also praised “the responsiveness of the municipal police who intervened quickly on the scene.”
Reinforcements have been dispatched to the area at the request of Prefect Étienne Guyot as investigations continue.
