Alphonse Mucha: A Major Exhibition Comes to Lyon’s Grand Hôtel-Dieu
Lyon, August 13, 2026 – The Grand Hôtel-Dieu in Lyon is set to host a significant monographic exhibition dedicated to Alphonse Mucha, a key figure in European visual culture at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This marks the first time such an extensive collection of Mucha’s work will be displayed in Lyon, offering a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts to delve into the artist’s distinctive style and thematic explorations.
The exhibition, which will run from September 4, 2026, to January 24, 2027, will showcase more than 90 original works, including iconic posters, intricate drawings, and evocative paintings. The curated journey will highlight the central role of the female figure in Mucha’s art, tracing its evolution through various contexts such as theatre, advertising, photography, nature, spirituality, and Slavic identity.
A Thematic Journey Through Mucha’s Oeuvre
The exhibition is organized into six thematic sections, each exploring a different facet of Mucha’s artistic development. Visitors will be guided through his progression from theatrical heroines to the dawn of modern advertising communication, from his use of photography as a working method to the construction of his iconic imagery. The exhibition also delves into his allegorical representations of the Slavic homeland and his engagement with new media in the 20th century, culminating in his ornamental figures inspired by nature.
The exhibition is curated by art historian Giulia Silvia Ghia and produced by Arthemisia, a leading international company in organizing and producing major art exhibitions, and Fever, a prominent technology platform for culture and entertainment discovery. They are collaborating with Art Nouveau Production s.r.o. Collection and BRIDGECONSULTINGpro, with exceptional loans from Portu Gallery Investments s.r.o., Prague.
About the Artist: Alphonse Mucha
Born in 1860 in Ivančice, Moravia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Alphonse Mucha received his artistic training in Vienna, Munich, and Italy before settling in Paris in 1887. A pivotal moment in his career came in 1894 with his collaboration with actress Sarah Bernhardt, which led to the birth of the distinctive “Mucha Style.” This style is characterized by its sinuous lines, floral motifs, and elegant female figures. Later in his career, Mucha dedicated a significant portion of his work to “The Slav Epic,” a monumental series of paintings chronicling the history of the Slavic peoples. He passed away in 1939.

Opening Hours: The exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The last entry is at 6:45 PM.
