Iconic Lyon Brasserie Enters Receivership Amidst Financial Struggles

Lyon, August 14, 2026 – The Grande Brasserie de la Tête d’Or, a prominent restaurant located in Lyon’s Cité internationale, has been placed in receivership. Ludovic Hernandez, who took over the establishment on December 31, 2025, initiated the procedure in an effort to safeguard its future amidst significant financial challenges.

The decision was confirmed by the Lyon Commercial Court at the beginning of August, as reported by Lyon Décideurs. This measure grants the brasserie a crucial period to implement financial adjustments and restructure its operations, with the ultimate goal of resuming full activity and regaining its former prominence.

A Challenging Takeover for a Celebrated Establishment

Ludovic Hernandez, a former elected official of the City of Lyon, acquired the brasserie, previously known as Brasserie 33 Cité, with ambitions to preserve its authentic French brasserie character while expanding its culinary offerings. The establishment, which first opened its doors in 2007, has a rich history, having been a platform for three renowned Lyon gastronomy experts: Frédéric Berthod, Christophe Marguin, and Mathieu Viannay.

Despite Hernandez’s determination and his experience running the Italian restaurant Giuseppe, the challenges faced by the Grande Brasserie proved substantial. The exact nature of the financial difficulties has not been fully disclosed, but the rapid move to receivership indicates the severity of the situation.

Hopes for a Resurgence

The Grande Brasserie de la Tête d’Or is one of the most recognized restaurants in the Cité internationale, strategically located opposite the Parc de la Tête d’Or. Its reputation and prime location make its potential closure a significant concern for Lyon’s culinary landscape.

The receivership process is designed to provide a framework for the business to reorganize its finances and operations under court supervision, aiming to avoid liquidation. This period will be critical for Hernandez and his team to develop a viable plan that addresses the underlying issues and secures the brasserie’s long-term sustainability.

The goal is to ensure that this “emblematic place” can continue to offer its classic, meticulously prepared dishes and maintain its status as a cornerstone of Lyon’s dining scene.

The community and patrons of the Grande Brasserie de la Tête d’Or will be closely watching the developments, hoping that this intervention will allow the beloved establishment to overcome its current hurdles and thrive once again.
