Lyon’s Parc de la Tête d’Or Shut Down Amidst Severe Weather Warnings

Lyon, September 8, 2026 – The City of Lyon announced the urgent closure of its major parks, gardens, and cemeteries, including the renowned Parc de la Tête d’Or, on Tuesday afternoon, September 8, 2026. The decision, effective from 4 PM, was made in response to a weather alert forecasting violent winds and storms.

“Due to a weather alert with wind gusts expected at 70 km/h, this Tuesday, September 8, parks and cemeteries in the City of Lyon will close from 4 PM,” stated the City of Lyon at 3:40 PM, just twenty minutes before the closures took effect.

The affected parks include Parc de la Tête d’Or, Parc de Gerland, and Parc Blandan. This measure aims to ensure public safety in anticipation of adverse weather conditions.

Risk of Storms and Strong Winds

Météo-France has issued a warning for this final day of a heatwave, indicating a risk of storms and strong winds over Lyon and the Rhône department. The department has been placed on a yellow alert for storm risks.

This is not the first time the Parc de la Tête d’Or has been impacted by severe weather. At the end of August, the park was hit by a very violent gust of wind, forcing its closure for five days in early September due to extensive damage to the vegetation. More than 100 trees were damaged in total. Several areas and frequently used paths within the park remain closed to the public as agents from the green spaces department continue their intervention, which is expected to last for several more days.

Previous Incidents Highlight Vulnerability

The recent closure underscores the park’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. The previous incident in late August caused significant disruption and required extensive cleanup efforts. The ongoing work to restore damaged areas means that parts of the park are still inaccessible to visitors, even before this latest closure.

City officials are prioritizing the safety of residents and visitors by taking proactive measures to prevent potential injuries from falling branches or other storm-related hazards. The decision to close the parks reflects a cautious approach in light of the severe weather warnings.

Impact on Public and Future Measures

While the closures are temporary, they highlight the increasing frequency of extreme weather phenomena and the need for cities to adapt their infrastructure and emergency response plans. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and adhere to official guidelines during periods of severe weather.

The City of Lyon’s swift action in closing the parks demonstrates a commitment to public safety. Further updates regarding the reopening of the parks will be provided once the weather conditions improve and it is deemed safe for public access.
