Major Customs Operation in Ambérieu-en-Bugey Targets Trafficking Networks

Ambérieu-en-Bugey, September 8 – A significant customs operation took place on September 2nd in Ambérieu-en-Bugey, a commune in the Ain department near Lyon. The operation, led by the Ain prefecture, involved blockading all access points to the town to control traffic flow and disrupt illicit drug and tobacco trafficking.

“The principle: cordon off access points to control flows and prevent traffickers from moving freely. Agents from the Bourg-en-Bresse, Annecy, Saint-Julien, and Vallard brigades were mobilized for this large-scale operation,” explained the departmental prefecture, which oversaw the initiative.

Extensive Resources Deployed

The operation specifically targeted “drug and tobacco trafficking.” A total of 28 customs agents and four canine units were deployed to monitor the main entry and exit routes of the commune, located northeast of Lyon.

Christophe Duverne, sub-prefect of the Belley arrondissement, was also present to supervise the customs operation, highlighting the official commitment to combating these illicit activities.

Limited Seizures, Strong Deterrent Effect

Despite the extensive resources, the immediate seizures were relatively modest. According to the prefecture’s report, 37.4 grams of cannabis resin were seized. Additionally, one driver found to be under the influence of alcohol was reported to the gendarmerie for further action.

However, the prefecture emphasized the broader impact of such operations: “Beyond the controls and seizures, this type of operation also strengthens deterrence by making it more difficult for illicit goods to pass through.” This suggests that the primary goal was not solely large-scale arrests but also to create a significant deterrent effect on potential traffickers operating in the region.

Ongoing Efforts to Combat Illicit Trade

This operation underscores the continuous efforts by French authorities to combat organized crime, particularly in the areas of drug and tobacco smuggling. The strategic choice to blockade an entire commune demonstrates a proactive approach to disrupting trafficking networks and securing regional borders.

The authorities continue to monitor and conduct similar operations across the region to ensure public safety and to curb the flow of illegal substances and products.
