Engine Fire Alert Forces Chalair Flight Back to Orly, Disrupting Airport Operations
Orly, September 11, 2026 – Air traffic at Orly Airport experienced significant disruptions on Friday, September 10, after a Chalair flight to Castres was forced to make an emergency return shortly after takeoff due to an engine fire alert. Although it was later confirmed to be a false alarm, the incident led to the rerouting of approximately twenty flights and caused delays throughout the day.
The incident occurred on Friday, September 10, when Chalair flight, carrying 18 passengers and three crew members, departed from Orly Airport. Just minutes into the flight, an alarm indicating a fire in one of the two engines was triggered.
Pilot’s Swift Action and Emergency Landing
Alain Battisti, CEO of Chalair, explained the sequence of events to actu Paris: “The fire alarm was triggered in one of the aircraft’s two engines. The pilot immediately shut down the engine and returned to land at the airport.”
Upon landing safely between two runways, the 18 passengers and three crew members were evacuated without incident. Emergency services, including firefighters, were immediately on the scene to secure the aircraft. “Fire crews immediately intervened to secure the plane upon its arrival,” stated Orly Airport communication. “They realized it was actually a false alarm.”
Airport Traffic Disrupted for Over Half an Hour
The false alarm, despite its non-threatening nature, caused considerable disruption to Orly Airport’s operations. For over half an hour, air traffic was significantly affected. Consequently, around twenty flights scheduled to land at Orly had to be diverted to Roissy-CDG Airport, leading to multiple flight delays that lasted for a portion of the day.
Battisti confirmed that investigations have been launched into the aircraft to understand why the alarm was triggered. “We need to understand why this alarm went off,” he stated.
Passengers Rerouted and Traffic Returns to Normal
The 18 passengers, whose journey was interrupted, were scheduled to take another flight later the same day to Toulouse, from where they would be transported to Castres, albeit with several hours of delay.
By early afternoon, air traffic at Orly Airport had returned to normal, allowing regular operations to resume. The incident highlights the rigorous safety protocols in place for air travel, where even a false alarm triggers a full emergency response to ensure the safety of all on board.
