14-Year-Old Cyclist in Critical Condition After Electric Vélo’v Accident in Lyon
Lyon, April 27, 2026 – A 14-year-old female cyclist is in critical condition after a severe electric Vélo’v accident that occurred on Sunday, April 26, at approximately 6:00 PM, in the 5th arrondissement of Lyon. Her vital prognosis is engaged following the incident on Montée du Chemin Neuf.
Violent Impact Without a Helmet
According to initial reports, the young teenager was descending the Montée du Chemin Neuf, a path shared by cyclists and pedestrians, on an electric Vélo’v. Unable to brake sufficiently, she violently collided with a low wall bordering the sidewalk, falling headfirst. She was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Thomas Rudigoz, the mayor of the 5th arrondissement, happened to be in the vicinity and stopped to check on the young victim. “She was with a friend who was also on a Vélo’v. She braked on the descent, but in the end, she was carried away by the speed,” stated Rudigoz. He further added, “We checked the brakes with some young people, and they were functional. The Vélo’v has been identified by JCDecaux services and the police.”
Hospitalized in Intensive Care
The young adolescent was immediately transported to the Women-Mother-Children Hospital in Bron. As of Monday morning, she remains in the intensive care unit, in a serious condition.
“Dangerous” Sector: Mayor Raises Alarm
Mayor Rudigoz, a member of the Renaissance party, expressed his concern regarding the specific location of the accident. “There is a problem of excessive speed with a very steep slope,” he asserted. He emphasized, “It’s dangerous for some, with a sharp turn at the end. Residents have told me they feel unsafe. The signage is completely inadequate. I have asked the Mayor of Lyon for a wave of speed controls. They conducted some recently. But residents have informed me that this is the third serious accident in three months. There is a repetition. Arrangements need to be made quickly.”
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of electric Vélo’v users, particularly in areas with challenging terrain. A year after the introduction of electric Vélo’v, tensions between users remain, as previously reported by local news outlets.
The accident underscores the importance of wearing helmets and exercising caution, especially on steep descents. Local authorities are urged to review and improve safety measures in this “dangerous” sector to prevent further incidents.
