About Alphonse Mucha

Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was a Czech painter, illustrator, and graphic artist, best known for his distinctive Art Nouveau style. Born in Ivančice, Moravia, he trained in Vienna, Munich, and Italy before settling in Paris in 1887. His collaboration with actress Sarah Bernhardt in 1894 marked a turning point in his career, leading to the development of the iconic ‘Mucha Style’ characterized by sinuous lines, floral motifs, and idealized female figures. Later in his career, he dedicated a significant portion of his work to ‘The Slav Epic,’ a series of twenty monumental canvases depicting the history of the Slavic peoples.

Exhibition Sections

The exhibition is structured into six thematic sections, offering a chronological and thematic exploration of Mucha’s artistic journey:

  1. Heroines of the Theater: Showcasing his early work for theatrical productions, particularly his iconic posters for Sarah Bernhardt.
  2. Birth of Modern Advertising: Exploring Mucha’s groundbreaking contributions to commercial art and graphic design.
  3. Photography as a Working Method: Revealing how Mucha utilized photography in his creative process.
  4. Construction of the Iconic Image: Analyzing the elements that defined and popularized the ‘Mucha Style’.
  5. Allegory of the Slavic Homeland: Highlighting his later works dedicated to Slavic identity and history.
  6. Ornamental Figures Inspired by Nature and New Media: Examining his use of natural motifs and engagement with emerging artistic techniques of the 20th century.
