Paris, August 26 – A road rage incident in the heart of Paris on Tuesday, August 25, resulted in a cyclist being stabbed. The suspect, a motorist, fled the scene but was later arrested. The victim, initially in critical condition, was discharged from the hospital with minor injuries.

Incident Details and Police Response

The altercation occurred around 1:30 PM on Rue de Sèze in the 9th arrondissement, between Place de la Madeleine and Olympia. According to police sources, the incident began with a minor traffic dispute between a cyclist and a motorist. As the motorist attempted to leave, the cyclist reportedly tried to stop him. The driver then allegedly stabbed the cyclist in the neck before fleeing.

Emergency services, including the Paris fire brigade, quickly arrived at the scene to provide aid to the victim. The cyclist was transported to the Georges-Pompidou European Hospital in the 15th arrondissement. While initial reports indicated a life-threatening condition with a suspected carotid artery injury, further examination revealed superficial wounds, resulting in a two-day temporary incapacity for work.

Suspect Apprehended and Investigation Underway

The suspect was arrested on the same day, around 5:00 PM, and taken into police custody. The Paris public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation for “attempted murder.” Details regarding the motorist’s profile and the exact motive for the dispute have not yet been released.

The 1st judicial police district is leading the investigation, which includes reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Official Reactions and Broader Concerns

Emmanuel Grégoire, Deputy Mayor of Paris, reacted strongly to the incident on social media platform X, condemning the “unbearable violence” against cyclists. He emphasized that “acts of violence against cyclists are unacceptable and occur far too often.” Grégoire stressed the city’s commitment to relentlessly combatting “motorized violence” to ensure that “roads and streets must be spaces of respect and safety for all.” He called for the swift apprehension and prosecution of the fleeing driver.

A Troubling Precedent: The Paul Varry Case

This incident draws parallels to the tragic death of Paul Varry, a 27-year-old cyclist who was run over and killed on Boulevard Malesherbes in the 8th arrondissement on October 15, 2024, after a verbal altercation with a motorist. In May, after an 18-month investigation, a judge ordered the motorist to stand trial for “murder,” alleging that he intentionally struck and ran over the cyclist with his 2.3-ton Mercedes SUV. This case sparked widespread outrage among cyclists and led to a government initiative to address road violence.

The current stabbing incident further highlights ongoing tensions and safety concerns for cyclists in urban environments. Authorities are committed to ensuring public safety and addressing the root causes of such violent encounters on the roads.
