Dengue Case Prompts Mosquito Eradication in Saint-Priest Near Lyon
Saint-Priest, August 14 – An emergency mosquito eradication operation was conducted in Saint-Priest, a commune located in the eastern part of the Lyon metropolitan area, on the night of August 11-12. This swift action followed the detection of a dengue case within the community. The individual affected had recently returned from abroad and had visited several locations in the region, according to France 3 Rhône-Alpes.
The operation, carried out by the Entente Interdépartementale pour la Démoustication (EID) team, involved the use of powerful insecticides to eliminate adult tiger mosquitoes. Personnel wore protective suits and cartridge masks during the night-time intervention.
Preventing Local Transmission
The primary objective of such interventions is to “rapidly reduce the density of adult mosquitoes to prevent any risk of local transmission of the virus to new individuals. It usually takes place within 2-3 working days following the field investigation,” stated the Regional Health Agency (ARS).
The operation was strategically scheduled during the night “to avoid the presence of people outdoors, minimize its impact on other insects, and take advantage of the best meteorological conditions,” the ARS further detailed.
The Threat of the Tiger Mosquito
The tiger mosquito, originally from Southeast Asia, has been established in the Rhône-Alpes region for approximately fifteen years. This invasive species is a known vector for several tropical diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. The warmer summer months are particularly conducive to the hatching of its eggs, increasing the risk of transmission.
The detection of a dengue case, even if imported, triggers immediate public health measures to prevent the establishment of a local transmission cycle. The rapid response in Saint-Priest highlights the authorities’ commitment to safeguarding public health against mosquito-borne illnesses.
Local residents are reminded to take precautions to limit mosquito breeding sites, such as eliminating standing water around their homes, which can serve as ideal environments for mosquito larvae development.
The ARS continues to monitor the situation closely and advises individuals experiencing symptoms consistent with dengue – such as fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and rash – to consult a doctor promptly, especially if they have recently traveled to affected areas.
