Disneyland Paris Announces Space Mountain Transformation: A Return to Classic Roots
Paris, August 16, 2026 – Disneyland Paris has revealed plans for a major refurbishment of its popular Space Mountain attraction, which will see it revert to its original theme, ‘Space Mountain – From the Earth to the Moon’. This transformation, set to commence in late 2027, aims to reintroduce the beloved Jules Verne-inspired narrative and steampunk aesthetic that captivated guests upon its 1995 debut.
For the past decade, the attraction has operated as ‘Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain’, taking guests on a mission for the Rebel Alliance. However, the upcoming renovation will bring back the iconic ‘moon’ to the heart of this thrilling experience, offering a new generation of visitors a chance to discover its classic storytelling with modern enhancements.
Extensive Refurbishment and Enhanced Guest Experience
Walt Disney Imagineering Paris is actively working on the new artistic direction for the attraction. The refurbishment, which will span several months, will go beyond essential technical and maintenance work. It will include new interior decor and props, an enhanced queue line, and new effects designed to immerse guests in an idealized era of early lunar travel, consistent with Discoveryland’s steampunk style. Nostalgic fans can also look forward to special effects that will enhance the iconic launch sequence.
Keith Rector, Senior Manager, Creative Art Director at Walt Disney Imagineering Paris, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “When Space Mountain opened in 1995, the attraction set a new benchmark as one of the most innovative and immersive roller coasters across all Disney Parks. Today, as Imagineers, it is both an honor and an exciting challenge to reimagine this iconic attraction for a new generation. While remaining true to the spirit and heritage of the original journey, this new version will build on all the innovations and cutting-edge technologies introduced over the years into the attraction, to offer an even more exhilarating experience for our guests.”
Return of Iconic Music and Modern Technology
A key highlight for many fans will be the return of the iconic music by composer Steve Bramson, which will be fully remastered to accompany guests on their journey to the moon. The revamped queue line will allow guests to once again observe the trains passing by, further immersing them in the new storyline. Original props will be integrated alongside new decorative elements along the ride path.
With over 30 years of technical improvements incorporated into the attraction over time, including a state-of-the-art lighting design installed on the exterior dome in 2025, Space Mountain – From the Earth to the Moon promises to remain a must-do experience for visitors.
Part of the ‘New Magic’ Program at Disneyland Paris
The transformation of Space Mountain is a significant step in the recently launched ‘New Magic’ program at Disneyland Paris. This ambitious initiative aims to enhance the guest experience and refresh classic attractions to surprise and delight all generations. Recent projects under this program include new decor inspired by original drawings by Imagineer and Disney Legend Marc Davis, enriching the banks of Rivers of the Far West in Frontierland. Several other projects are currently in various stages of development and will be unveiled progressively.
The passion and dedication of the Walt Disney Imagineering Paris team are driving these projects, which are just the beginning of many exceptional moments to come for Disneyland Paris.
