This decision follows a prolonged absence of rain since the beginning of June, consecutive heatwaves, and persistently high temperatures. The prefecture indicated that river flows are now ‘low for the season’ and weather forecasts do not predict any short to medium-term improvement.

The prefecture’s decree specifically targets all waterways within the Rhône department and the Lyon Metropolis, along with the lower Saône aquifer. This measure is a direct consequence of the severe weather conditions experienced in recent weeks, which have significantly impacted water levels across the region.
Local authorities, including Eau du Grand Lyon, had previously urged residents to be mindful of their water consumption during the ongoing heatwave. The official drought alert now reinforces these calls with mandatory restrictions.
New Restrictions for Residents and Businesses
The transition to a drought alert level triggers a series of new water usage restrictions. For private individuals, washing vehicles at home and filling private swimming pools for the first time are now prohibited. Watering gardens, vegetable patches, green spaces, and sports fields is also banned during daytime hours, specifically between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM (11:00 AM to 6:00 PM along the Saône axis).
Furthermore, the operation of open-circuit fountains has been suspended. While agricultural and industrial uses are generally still permitted, they are now subject to stricter regulations.
The prefecture has warned that compliance checks will be carried out, and individuals found violating these restrictions could face fines of up to 1,500 euros.
