The exhibition is scheduled to open in Paris at the Musée Marmottan Monet on September 24, 2026, and will run until January 31, 2027. Following its presentation in Paris, it will move to Grenoble, where it will be on display from March 5 to July 4, 2027.
Admission prices range from 0 to 14 euros. An audioguide will be available in both French and English for an additional 4 euros. Reservations are mandatory for all visitors.
A Journey Through Landscape and History
The exhibition, subtitled “Landscape Stories (1890-2026)”, posits that the 20th century, marked by global conflicts, re-established the intrinsic link between landscape and history. What was once perceived as a separation, a triumph of autonomous landscape art, is now understood as a new alliance: the union of two forces that mutually support each other in confronting the violence of the world.
The exhibition aims to visibly and intelligibly shape this field of forces by offering an eleven-station journey that chronologically and thematically interrogates the relationship between landscape and history.
Key Themes and Sections
The journey commences with Claude Monet’s gesture of offering two of his “Water Lilies” to France, the day after the armistice of November 11, 1918, to celebrate victory. This act symbolizes the constant resistance of landscape as an agent of contemporary history.
The exhibition will explore various facets of this relationship, including wars, the quest for origin, appropriation and nostalgia, inner landscapes, and the interplay between nature and abstraction. It will also touch upon the connection between landscape and nation, the relationship to time and space, and how landscape, as an active force, covers history, oscillating between mourning and forgetting. Furthermore, it will examine how landscape has emerged as a witness, articulating our era’s aspirations, crises, utopias, and anxieties.
Today, landscape is no longer merely a pictorial genre as it once was. Through photography, sculpture, video, and painting, artists endeavor to give form to our history: our history within the landscape.
