Miribel, August 10, 2026 – A tragic apartment fire that occurred on the evening of Wednesday, August 5, in Miribel (Ain), just outside Lyon, has now resulted in a second fatality. After the death of a 58-year-old man, announced last Thursday morning, it has been confirmed that his 19-year-old daughter also died from her injuries sustained in the blaze.
Second Victim Confirmed After Critical Condition
The young woman, identified as Inès Lakehal, had been hospitalized in critical condition at Édouard Herriot Hospital in Lyon since the incident. Her death was confirmed over the weekend by multiple sources, including the mayor of Miribel and the local mosque.
The Miribel mosque issued a statement on August 8, indicating, “The Miribel mosque organized a collection this Friday, 07/08/2026, to support and relieve the Lakehal family, severely affected by the death of our brother Mohamed Lakehal and his daughter Inès.”
Sylvie Viricel, Mayor of Miribel, also expressed profound sadness, stating, “It is with deep sorrow that the town of Miribel pays tribute to the two victims of the terrible fire that devastated an apartment in the Trève district on the night of August 6. Two lives from the same family brutally taken. A terrible and devastating tragedy, which leaves behind a family and loved ones facing immense pain. In this time of remembrance, all our thoughts go to their family, their loved ones, and all those who knew and loved them. We also do not forget the solidarity of the residents of the neighborhood, as well as the courage and dedication of the gendarmes, firefighters, and SAMU teams, who tried everything to save them.”
Firefighters Found Victims Unresponsive
Mohamed Lakehal, the 58-year-old father, was found unresponsive in the apartment by firefighters. Despite resuscitation attempts, he could not be saved. His daughter, Inès, was evacuated to a hospital with a critical prognosis, while another victim received treatment for minor injuries.
