Gare de Lyon to See Major Disruptions from May 1-3 for Modernization Works
Lyon, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France, April 21, 2026 – Paris Gare de Lyon, a major railway hub serving 300 million travelers annually, is scheduled for significant disruptions from May 1st to 3rd, 2026. These disruptions are due to extensive modernization works being carried out by SNCF Réseau, focusing on upgrading the station’s signaling systems.
Extensive Modernization Efforts Underway
The primary focus of these works is the replacement of the underground station’s signal box and the avant-gare signal box. The avant-gare system regulates all train movements between Paris and Villeneuve-Saint-Georges in Val-de-Marne. These crucial components are being replaced with state-of-the-art computerized systems, as detailed in a press release from SNCF. This initiative is part of a broader railway operational modernization program that commenced in 2017.
SNCF Réseau stated, “The commissioning of the computerized signal box at Gare de Lyon will also prepare for future modernization work on the Île-de-France North-South axis.”
In addition to the signaling upgrades, the long weekend will also see the commissioning of new access tracks for the future Villeneuve Demain technical center. This new center is designed to handle the maintenance of RER D and R line trains in the long term. Further preparatory technical works are also planned for an extensive project involving the replacement of switches and tracks, scheduled for next summer at Paris Gare de Lyon’s underground station.
Two Years of Preparation Culminate in Three-Day Operation
The preparatory phase for these modernization works has been ongoing for two years, primarily conducted during nighttime hours to minimize impact on daily services. The choice of the May 1st weekend for these intensive operations was strategic. “The May 1st weekend was chosen to avoid penalizing the very large number of daily commuters who use the R and RER D lines,” explained the railway company.
The scale of the operation is substantial, requiring the deployment of nearly 500 SNCF operators over the three-day period. These personnel will be actively involved across the various construction sites. The preparatory phases involved the installation of approximately 400 kilometers of cables, facilitating the creation and testing of 15,000 connections between control systems during the May 1st weekend.

Travelers using the RER D and R lines, as well as other services passing through Gare de Lyon, should anticipate significant alterations to their journeys.
