Paris, April 4, 2026 – The Musée Maillol in Paris is set to host the ‘Gianni Versace Retrospective’ exhibition from June 5 to September 6, 2026. This will be the first major retrospective dedicated to the iconic designer in France since 1986, offering a comprehensive look at his influential career.
A Homage to a Fashion Visionary
Gianni Versace, born in 1946 and tragically deceased in 1997, transformed his eponymous brand into one of the most recognizable names in the fashion industry. His creations were characterized by their baroque and glamorous aesthetic, often infused with a provocative sensibility and a deep appreciation for art and culture. The exhibition, which has previously toured several European museums since its debut in Berlin in 2018, aims to reintroduce the founder’s work to a new generation, especially as discussions within the fashion world hint at the arrival of Belgian designer Pieter Mulier as the brand’s new artistic director, following its recent acquisition by the Prada group.
An Extensive Collection on Display
The retrospective will feature approximately 450 pieces, including original silhouettes, accessories, sketches, decorative objects, photographs, videos, and interviews. This extensive collection has been made possible through private lenders, as the exhibition is not officially associated with Gianni Versace S.r.l. or the Versace family.
The Parisian leg of the exhibition is designed to trace Versace’s entire career through a scenography inspired by the concept of a fashion runway. As explained by the exhibition organizers, “Paris was the world’s runway” for Gianni Versace.
Versace’s Enduring Connection to Paris
Indeed, it was in Paris, specifically at the Ritz, that Versace chose to debut his haute couture line, Atelier Versace, in 1989. This decision underscored his special connection with the city, even as his Milanese shows contributed to the prestigious rivalry between the Fashion Weeks of the two capitals. The exhibition at the Musée Maillol will also serve as a tribute to what would have been Versace’s 80th birthday, nearly 30 years after his untimely passing.
Impact on the Fashion Landscape
Versace’s influence on fashion is undeniable. His bold designs and innovative use of materials pushed boundaries and redefined luxury. The exhibition will highlight his contributions to the industry, showcasing how his vision continues to resonate in contemporary fashion. His ability to blend classical art references with modern sensuality created a distinctive style that remains iconic.
Exhibition Details and Anticipated Attendance
