Laurent Wauquiez, a prominent figure in French politics and a member of the LR party, is once again at the center of a legal storm in Lyon. This move comes after the Region allegedly failed to comply with a directive from the Commission d’accès aux documents administratifs (Cada) to release the documents.
The Cada had, on August 7, 2026, notified the Region of its obligation to communicate the requested documents, which the Ecologists had been seeking since March 2026. However, facing what they describe as ‘silence’ from the Region, the opposition councillors have decided to escalate the matter to the administrative court of Lyon.
“Such opacity regarding the use of public money is not acceptable. Once again, we are forced to act legally.” – Maxime Meyer, Co-President of the Ecologists AURA group.
Myriam Laïdouni, a regional elected official from Isère and responsible for the dossier, further emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Our house is burning, public money must be used to put out the fire and not to water the personal interests of Mr. Wauquiez or anyone else.”
Allegations of ‘Misuse of Public Funds’ and ‘De Facto Presidency’
Wauquiez’s political opponents are not only seeking transparency on his expense reports but also accuse him of “misuse of public funds.” They contend that his position as ‘special advisor’ effectively makes him the “de facto president” of the Region, allowing him to circumvent the prohibition on holding multiple mandates since his election as a deputy.
