Lyon 7th: Energy Renovation Works Completed on Nine Social Housing Units

Lyon, August 9, 2026 – A major energy renovation project has been completed on a residence in Lyon’s 7th arrondissement, encompassing nine social housing units and a commercial space. The initiative, led by GrandLyon Habitat, aimed to significantly enhance the building’s thermal and acoustic performance, as well as the overall comfort for its residents. The total cost of the operation exceeded 1.3 million euros, including the acquisition of the building.

The residence, located at the corner of Rue Bancel and Avenue Berthelot, was acquired by GrandLyon Habitat in October 2023 from the Métropole de Lyon under an emphyteutic lease. The renovation works, amounting to 317,550 euros, were carried out in agreement with the Architects of Bâtiments de France.

In-depth Renovation for Improved Performance

The improvements, conducted between June 2025 and February 2026, focused on several key areas. These included the implementation of internal thermal insulation for the apartments and insulation of the attics. Additionally, exterior joinery and landing doors were replaced, and the metal shutters were thoroughly revised to ensure optimal performance and aesthetics.

A primary objective of GrandLyon Habitat was to pay particular attention to the indoor comfort of the households. To achieve this, several actions were undertaken. Radiators were replaced with high-performance electrical equipment, and the controlled mechanical ventilation (CMV) system was completely refurbished. Electrical installations were brought up to standard, sanitary appliances were replaced, and certain floor coverings were redone. Painting work related to the installation of interior insulation was also completed, contributing to a fresh and modern living environment.

Temporary Relocation and Reintegration of Residents

The renovation works were carried out in a vacant building. The two households living in the residence at the time were temporarily relocated to already renovated apartments within the same building for several weeks. Following the completion of the operation, these residents moved back into their improved homes and were joined by seven new households, bringing the building to full occupancy.

The commercial space located on the ground floor also benefited from the renovation, with its ceiling being completely redone. This ensures that both residential and commercial occupants can enjoy the benefits of a modernized and energy-efficient building.

Commitment to Sustainable and Accessible Housing

This project is part of GrandLyon Habitat’s broader commitment to providing sustainable, comfortable, and accessible social housing. The organization regularly undertakes initiatives to improve its housing stock, focusing on energy efficiency, accessibility for people with disabilities, and the greening of urban spaces.

Recent similar projects by GrandLyon Habitat include assessing the accessibility of its residences for people with disabilities and the elderly, accelerating the de-impermeabilization of its soils in Lyon, and giving a second life to the Jean-Moulin residence. These efforts underscore GrandLyon Habitat’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for its tenants and contributing to the ecological transition of the Lyon metropolitan area.

The completion of this renovation project in Lyon’s 7th arrondissement marks another significant step in GrandLyon Habitat’s mission to offer high-quality, energy-efficient social housing, ensuring improved living conditions for its residents while contributing to urban sustainability.
