Lyon, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France – The disappearance of 30-year-old Lyon engineer Boris Poyer in Peru has raised serious concerns, with authorities now exploring a criminal lead. Poyer, who was on a trip to Peru, has not been heard from since Sunday, July 12, French time.

Disappearance and Initial Search Efforts

Boris Poyer last connected to WhatsApp on Sunday, July 12, at 2:11 AM, French time. According to the Peruvian National Police, he was last seen on Friday, July 10, at noon, at his accommodation in Puerto de Malabrigo, a coastal village in the La Libertad region, northwest of Peru.

Poyer, an avid surfer, had spent the morning of July 10 surfing and returned his rented board before noon. An encouraging lead emerged recently, suggesting he might have been seen in a local house, a tip currently being verified by investigators.

Parents Travel to Peru Amid Growing Concerns

Contacted by actu Lyon, Catherine Redon, Boris’s stepmother, confirmed that his parents are scheduled to fly to Lima this Saturday, July 18, to meet with investigators from the Trujillo province. Their journey underscores the family’s deep concern and determination to find Boris.

Criminal Lead Under Investigation

Peruvian authorities have been trying to piece together Poyer’s activities before his disappearance. Days prior, he had attended a Thai boxing session at ‘The Bullet Combat’ club in Pacasmayo. “Boris is very sociable; during his travels, he would forge connections through activities,” his stepmother noted.

He sustained a minor injury during training and reportedly visited a hospital for a check-up as a precaution. Poyer had also expressed an interest in hiking a nearby mountain, though the exact timing of this conversation relative to other events remains unclear.

Interestingly, all of Poyer’s belongings, including his mobile phone, were left in his room at ‘Casa Anita.’ The phone appeared to be disconnected from the internet when his disappearance was noted after three days. The presence of his wallet and passport in the room is still being verified.

Information gathered by the family through contact with the police station and the French Embassy suggests a criminal scenario is being prioritized. The boxing club Poyer visited is reportedly frequented by individuals linked to drug trafficking and human trafficking. These connections are still under investigation and require further confirmation.

Who is Boris Poyer?

Boris Poyer is an ENS graduate who decided to stay in the coastal town after his Brazilian tourist visa expired. Passionate about surfing, he aimed to enjoy the waves while continuing his remote professional work. “For the past 5 years, he has traveled the globe with his computer, teaching math to students in preparatory math and physics classes,” his stepmother stated.

Catherine Redon added, “He has an experience that is perhaps far greater than that of ordinary people. However, that doesn’t mean he is accustomed to the type of danger he has encountered there in South America.” Poyer had visited the region previously and had extended a two-day stay to eight days. He is fluent in Spanish and had lived in Mexico for six months.

Family’s Plea and Ongoing Search

Catherine Redon shared the profound distress of Boris’s father, stating, “My husband, like all fathers, is afraid. But fear makes you act. The parents are taking every possible step. They are in an unknown country, in the dark, with language and cultural barriers, and a different police and justice system. They were advised to bring dollars, as they might need to pay people.”

The search efforts are ongoing and active. A specialized team for missing persons has been mobilized, and checks have been made in hospitals and surrounding areas, including Pacasmayo. Authorities hope that security cameras in the neighborhood may have captured his movements.

A friend of Boris on site is actively assisting in the search, coordinating with the rest of the group. ‘The Bullet Combat’ club will be contacted to gather more information about his boxing session and confirm the exact date. A local channel, SOL TV, from the Trujillo region, has also broadcasted the disappearance, mobilizing local support and providing useful information, including confirmation of the location and police actions already taken.

A missing person report has also been filed in France, complementing the complaint lodged in Peru, to ensure the case progresses on both fronts simultaneously.
