Lyon, September 7 – The traditional restaurant sector in Lyon is facing a severe crisis, with numerous establishments reporting declining revenues and an increasing number of closures. This alarming trend, highlighted by industry professionals, points to a challenging economic environment for a city renowned for its gastronomy.

Economic Downturn Hits Lyon’s Culinary Scene

In recent weeks, a wave of bad news has swept through Lyon’s restaurant industry. While some establishments are grappling with manageable difficulties, others have been forced to permanently close their doors. This situation reflects a broader national trend, as noted by Chef Thierry Marx, president of the Umih (Union des Métiers et des Industries de l’Hôtellerie), who stated on August 27 that “25 restaurants close every day in France.”

Key Factors Contributing to the Crisis

An Umih survey conducted among 1,300 professionals nationwide revealed that 63.7% of establishments recorded a decrease in turnover during July and August compared to the previous year. The primary reasons cited for this downturn, far outweighing other factors, are:

  • Reduced Purchasing Power: Customers are becoming more selective with their spending, opting for fewer desserts, fewer drinks, or shorter meal options. This shift in consumer behavior directly impacts restaurant profitability.
  • Repeated Heatwaves: Consecutive heatwaves have significantly affected customer traffic, particularly impacting lunchtime services and outdoor terraces, crucial for many traditional restaurants.

The Umih, in partnership with the Order of Chartered Accountants, launched an initiative at the end of August to address these pressing issues.

Impact on Lyon’s Gastronomic Reputation

Lyon, often celebrated as the gastronomic capital of France, is feeling the profound effects of this crisis. The closure of traditional restaurants not only signifies economic hardship but also threatens the city’s culinary heritage and vibrant dining culture. The challenges faced by these establishments underscore the need for concerted efforts from industry stakeholders and local authorities to safeguard this vital sector.

As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on understanding the full scope of the crisis and developing sustainable solutions to support Lyon’s traditional restaurants through these turbulent times. The long-term implications for employment, tourism, and the city’s identity as a culinary destination are significant.
