Lyon’s Bachut Square Undergoes Major Transformation, Renamed Pina Bausch Esplanade
Lyon, April 13, 2026 – After almost a year of extensive renovation work, the former Bachut Square in Lyon’s 8th arrondissement has been unveiled with a new identity and a completely transformed landscape. Renamed the Pina Bausch Esplanade, in tribute to the renowned German choreographer, this 8,500 m² space, once widely regarded as an ‘ugly and useless’ car park, has been reimagined as a verdant urban oasis. The project, costing nearly 3 million euros, was jointly funded by the City and the Métropole de Lyon.
A Green Transformation for a Revitalized Urban Space
The transformation, which began in July 2025 on the northern forecourt of the Maison de la Danse, was originally scheduled for completion by the end of March 2026. Construction barriers are expected to be fully removed within days, marking the official opening of the esplanade. The project focused on extensive greening and a complete reorganization of the space, moving away from its previous mineral and utilitarian character.
Residents have largely welcomed the changes. One local observed, "Personally, yes, I like it a lot," noting the new landscaping. Another passerby remarked, "It’s almost disorienting," expressing a sense of rediscovery of the area. "Working nearby, I’ll be able to come and eat peacefully in the square," said a happy resident, highlighting the anticipated comfort of the new amenities. Local shopkeepers also see the transformation as an opportunity, expecting an influx of new customers.
Anticipation and Accessibility Concerns
While many are pleased, some residents expressed impatience regarding the duration of the works. "We can’t wait for it to end, even for pedestrians, it’s not the most practical," commented one resident, referring to the constrained pathways and detours that have forced pedestrians to occasionally use cycle paths during the construction period.
A key concern that remains for some is accessibility, particularly regarding parking. The new esplanade no longer includes the parking spaces that were previously available for visitors to the Maison de la Danse. This has led to worries among some residents about potential parking shortages, especially given the venue’s popularity.
