Lyon, August 3 – A late-night football game turned into a tragedy early Sunday morning when a 27-year-old man drowned in the Rhône River after attempting to retrieve a ball that had fallen into the water. The incident occurred around 2:00 AM near the Pont de la Guillotière.
Tragic Incident Near Pont de la Guillotière
The victim, whose identity has not been released, was playing football with another individual when their ball went into the Rhône. Without hesitation, the 27-year-old jumped into the river to retrieve it. However, he was unable to make it back to the bank and was swept away by the strong current.
The Rhône River is known for its dangerous conditions, including intense currents, whirlpools, and submerged debris. Swimming in the river is strictly prohibited due to these hazards.
Rescue Efforts Unsuccessful
Emergency services were immediately alerted to the situation. Rescue teams were dispatched to the Quai du Docteur-Gailleton (Lyon 2e), close to the Pont de la Guillotière and Place Bellecour. They successfully recovered the man’s lifeless body from the water.
Despite immediate attempts at resuscitation, the victim, who was in cardiorespiratory arrest, could not be revived. The efforts of the emergency personnel were ultimately in vain.
Drone Technology for Drowning Victims – A Daytime-Only Solution
It is worth noting that the Rhône fire department recently acquired an innovative autonomous drone in early July. This drone is designed to quickly locate drowning victims in the Rhône between La Feyssine (Villeurbanne) and Confluence (Lyon 2e).
However, this advanced technology is currently only authorized for use during daylight hours. Had the incident occurred during the day, the drone might have played a crucial role in a more rapid response and potentially a different outcome.
