Lyon Loses Iconic Fashion Boutique: Nathalie Chaize Closes Doors Due to Rent Hike

Lyon, June 3, 2026 – After nine years at Quai Général Sarrail, Lyon-based designer Nathalie Chaize has announced the closure of her historic boutique. This decision, forced by a significant rent increase, also paves the way for a new chapter for the emblematic brand.

In the landscape of Lyon fashion, some names span decades. Nathalie Chaize is one of them. Since 1985, the designer has been creating feminine, colorful, and timeless fashion, distributed throughout France. Today, however, an important chapter in her history is closing with the announced shutdown of her boutique at 11, Quai Général Sarrail, her last directly owned store.

Forty Years of Creation, Between Architecture and Fashion

Nothing initially destined Nathalie Chaize to become a stylist. A student of architecture, she pivoted to fashion midway through her studies and won several styling competitions. One of them, presided over by Paco Rabanne, changed her life. Selected alongside Yves Casile, her future husband and associate, she decided to create her own company in 1985.

Over the years, the brand developed, eventually employing around fifty people and operating a dozen directly owned boutiques across France, from Paris to Bordeaux, via Lille, Rennes, and Lyon. At its peak, Nathalie Chaize also had nearly 300 distributors. “We had quite prosperous periods in the 2000s,” recalls the designer.

“I Immediately Took This as a Sign of Destiny”

The closure of the Lyon boutique is not, however, due to a cessation of business. At the expiry of the commercial lease, the landlord requested a new contract with a nearly doubled rent. “Since it’s a complicated period for retail, we told ourselves that, at the limit, we would leave and reinvent distribution in Lyon differently,” explains Nathalie Chaize.

“I immediately took this as a sign of destiny. I told myself it was time to move, to invent something else,” explains the designer, who did not wish to engage in a long legal battle. Before definitively leaving the premises at the end of September, Nathalie Chaize is organizing a total liquidation from June 2 to August 1, 2026. Recent and old collections, the designer’s personal archives, winter pieces, accessories, and even some of the furniture will be offered, with discounts ranging from 50% to 80%.

The boutique’s furniture is also for sale.

A New Adventure Begins

While the Quai Sarrail boutique is preparing to close its doors, the Nathalie Chaize brand continues its activity. Strong with its multi-brand distributors and its e-shop, the company retains its eight employees and is already thinking about the next steps.

Two avenues are currently being explored: finding a better-located premises, possibly in Presqu’île, or developing a model of ephemeral sales inspired by factory sales, which the brand already organizes in Dardilly. “Perhaps choose a nice place and plan, for example, every two months a sale for a few days, with a cocktail, something more dynamic. We have to try to reinvent retail a bit,” she confides.

One thing is certain: after forty years of creation and more than 80 collections designed, Nathalie Chaize has no intention of putting away her pencils. “I’m used to changes,” she slips. A philosophy that perfectly summarizes the journey of this Lyon entrepreneur, for whom every end primarily resembles a new beginning.
