Notre-Dame Hosts Mass for Persecuted Eastern Christians Amidst Middle East Conflicts

Paris, May 10 – Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris held a significant mass on Sunday, May 10, dedicated to Eastern Christians who are increasingly caught in the crossfire of escalating conflicts in the Middle East. The ceremony marked the 170th anniversary of L’Œuvre d’Orient, an association committed to supporting local parishes in their educational, health, and social missions.

The mass took place at 3:00 PM, drawing attention to the severe hardships faced by these communities, especially in regions like Lebanon, which is experiencing daily aggressions stemming from the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. The event underscored the critical need for humanitarian aid and spiritual solidarity for these vulnerable populations.

Humanitarian Aid Efforts in South Lebanon

Vincent Gelot, who leads L’Œuvre d’Orient’s operations in the field, shared insights into the organization’s urgent humanitarian efforts. “We have conducted several direct humanitarian aid convoys to South Lebanon to provide emergency assistance, including food baskets, hygiene kits, powdered milk for children, and medicines. These are essential items requested by villages in South Lebanon, which are cut off from the rest of the country due to the war, deprived of resources, and threatened with disappearance,” Gelot explained to CNEWS.

Gelot emphasized that beyond material aid, the presence of L’Œuvre d’Orient is a crucial message of support. “In the field, we accompany these convoys because it is essential, beyond providing humanitarian aid, to tell them that we are present, that France thinks of them, that the Church of France thinks of them, that they are important to us, and that we admire their courage and their peaceful resistance in the face of everything that is happening,” he added.

Challenges and Persecutions Faced by Eastern Christians

The plight of Eastern Christians extends beyond Lebanon. Other Christian communities have also encountered numerous obstacles and acts of persecution. For instance, on March 4, buildings belonging to the Chaldean Church in Erbil were reportedly hit by drone attacks, as described by the local archdiocese. These incidents highlight the severe threats and dangers confronting Christian populations across the region.

Eastern Christian Delegation to be Received at European Parliament

To shed light on their difficulties and the persecutions they endure, a delegation of Eastern Christians is scheduled to be received at the European Parliament this Tuesday. This meeting aims to raise awareness among European policymakers about the urgent need for protection and support for these communities, ensuring their voices are heard on an international platform.

L’Œuvre d’Orient: 170 Years of Support

Founded 170 years ago, L’Œuvre d’Orient has a long-standing history of commitment to Eastern Christian communities. The organization’s work encompasses a wide range of activities, from providing essential services to promoting education and healthcare, all aimed at enabling these communities to maintain their presence and fulfill their missions in their homelands despite formidable challenges. The mass at Notre-Dame served as a powerful reminder of this enduring dedication and the ongoing need for its vital work.

The current geopolitical landscape in the Middle East has exacerbated the vulnerabilities of these communities, making the support provided by organizations like L’Œuvre d’Orient more critical than ever. The conflicts have led to displacement, destruction of infrastructure, and a significant decline in resources, threatening the very existence of ancient Christian communities in the region.

The event in Paris not only offered a moment of prayer and reflection but also served as a call to action for greater international solidarity and concrete measures to protect religious minorities in conflict zones. The ongoing efforts by L’Œuvre d’Orient and similar organizations are crucial in preserving the rich cultural and religious heritage of Eastern Christians and ensuring their future.
