Over 250 Migrants Gather at Paris Centre City Hall, Demanding Urgent Shelter
Paris, August 18, 2026 – More than 250 homeless migrants have been gathered for several days in front of Paris Centre City Hall, located in the 3rd arrondissement of the capital. They are demanding immediate housing, citing concerns for their safety while living on the streets of Paris.
Since Thursday, August 13, these individuals, carrying few belongings and some food, have occupied the city hall’s esplanade. Their collective plea is for secure shelter.
A Call for Equality and Safety
“The motto of France is ‘liberty, equality, and fraternity,’ so we expect equality from the State, because every person deserves shelter,” stated one woman from Congo, an asylum seeker in France, who is among those waiting on the large concrete slab. She is urgently requesting emergency accommodation.
Beyond merely finding a roof over their heads, these individuals primarily seek a safe place to sleep. “Being left to ourselves on the streets is dangerous. That is why we came in front of the city hall. We ask them to have pity on us and find a place to put us,” pleaded another woman from Côte d’Ivoire to CNEWS. Having been in France for seven years, she claims to have no other solution.
Local Support and City’s Response
On site, the CGT trade union and the Utopia56 association are actively supporting the individuals and families present on the city hall’s forecourt. Local shopkeepers in the vicinity have also expressed their solidarity.
“I find it shocking to leave people like this, abandoned,” lamented one shopkeeper, while another expressed hope that “they will win their case.”
In response to the situation, the City of Paris has indicated that it is continuing social assessments. Furthermore, an emergency plan to provide a sustainable solution to the housing crisis has been requested from the State.
