Major Robert Doisneau Retrospective Arrives at La Sucrière in Lyon
Lyon, August 9, 2026 – Following the immense success of the “Titanic: An Immersive Journey” exhibition, La Sucrière in Lyon is set to host another major cultural event. A new exclusive exhibition, entirely dedicated to the acclaimed French photographer Robert Doisneau, will open its doors on September 4, 2026.
The previous exhibition, “Titanic: An Immersive Journey,” saw hundreds of thousands of visitors between September 2025 and July 2026, and was extended twice due to popular demand. Organizers anticipate that Doisneau’s incredible body of work will similarly attract a large audience.
“A Deepened and Renewed Look” at His Work
The upcoming retrospective, titled “Robert Doisneau: Instants Donnés,” promises “a deepened and renewed look at the photographer’s work.” According to the organizers, the exhibition aims to move beyond the reductive image of Doisneau as merely a nostalgic photographer of old Paris.
“Far from the reductive image of the nostalgic photographer of old Paris, this retrospective highlights an artist deeply rooted in his time, an observer of the social world and human relationships,” stated the exhibition’s organizers.
Over 400 Photographs, Including Unseen Images of Lyon
The exhibition journey will be structured around a dozen themes, showcasing more than 400 photographs taken between 1934 and 1992. Visitors can expect to see iconic images, including children, portraits of artists and writers, and scenes of bistros and streets. Additionally, the exhibition will feature “much lesser-known subjects such as social photography […] as well as his work as an illustrator for the press and advertising.”
A unique highlight of the exhibition will be the inclusion of photographs of Lyon taken by Robert Doisneau in 1950 for Vogue magazine. These images will be presented with a novel scenography designed to spotlight the city of Lyon.
Tickets for the exhibition, with a full price starting from €16.90, are not yet on sale. However, a pre-registration list is currently available for those interested in attending.

Robert Doisneau (1912-1994) was a celebrated French photographer known for his poetic and often humorous depictions of Parisian street life. His most famous work, “The Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville” (1950), has become an iconic image of post-war romance. Doisneau’s work often captured candid moments of everyday life, reflecting his deep humanism and keen observation skills. He worked for various magazines, including Vogue, and was a member of the Agence Rapho photo agency.
