The aroma of fresh paint, not antiseptic, subtly fills the air in Sylvain Favier’s office. On the wall, a vibrant green AS Saint-Étienne jersey proudly hangs, an undeniable nod to his roots in a city where the color green isn’t always welcomed with open arms. “In fact, I put the tenacity of Saint-Étienne at the service of Lyonnaise expertise,” he smiles, a phrase that perfectly encapsulates the man: serious yet approachable, demanding yet never aloof. Arriving at Clinique du Parc, his conviction was simple: before changing a house, one must first understand it.
From Chance Encounter to Calling
Nothing initially destined Sylvain Favier for a career in healthcare. After preparatory classes for HEC, a management degree, and a DESS in private hospital management, he landed his first apprenticeship in a medical analysis laboratory almost by accident. “I took the first position offered to me,” he recounts. Sometimes, chance plays a hand in destiny, and he was immediately captivated by the sector.
Curious and driven, he quickly climbed the ranks, becoming a clinic director at just 26. His journey took him through Paris, Natécia, the Private Hospital of Eastern Lyon, Ramsay Santé, the Polyclinique du Beaujolais where he navigated the COVID crisis, and an unexpected interlude at Sport dans la Ville, before returning to healthcare in Ambérieu-en-Bugey.
His career has been built on seizing opportunities rather than meticulously planned steps. “Often, when the bus comes, you have to get on. It won’t pass three times. You have to know how to seize the opportunity,” he summarizes.
Preserving the Soul of Clinique du Parc
Since January, Sylvain Favier has been at the helm of one of Lyon’s most emblematic private medical establishments. It boasts a hundred liberal surgeons, nearly 240 employees, a turnover of 35 million euros, and handles 100 to 120 patients daily, with a large majority undergoing outpatient surgery.
A modern building located on Boulevard Stalingrad, Clinique du Parc, owned by the ELSAN group, is a historical reference in orthopedics. It also excels in aesthetic, bariatric, ophthalmologic, and neurosurgical procedures. “Clinique du Parc is a Lyonnaise institution. It has always been at the forefront of innovation while maintaining a human spirit. It is this DNA that must be preserved for the future,” insists the director.
His first instinct wasn’t to impose his methods, but to listen. To meet the teams, the practitioners, to understand what constitutes the clinic’s identity before guiding its evolution.
The Locker Room as a Management School
To truly understand Sylvain Favier, one must step into a football locker room. Vice-president of FC Lyon-Croix-Rousse, a loyal supporter of “Les Verts,” he openly acknowledges the influence of team sports on his leadership style. “My values, I learned them in team sports. Performance, I learned in individual sports,” he emphasizes.
His office sometimes transforms into a playful arena. The Saint-Étienne jersey serves as an “icebreaker.” Dressed in green, teams sometimes come to ask for the director’s signature, and everyone knows the joke: “If Saint-Étienne wins this weekend, you’ll have a good week!”
Behind the humor lies a management philosophy inspired by Albert Camus, whose quote he loves to cite: “What I know most surely about morality and the obligations of men, I owe to football.”
And when asked about his ambitions, he answers almost against the current of his time. No career ladder to climb, no next position to conquer. Only one guiding principle: to leave an institution stronger than he found it. “To be serious without taking oneself too seriously,” he summarizes. A formula that, in many ways, could become his signature.
