Violent Clashes Erupt in Lyon After France’s World Cup Defeat, One Man Shot
Lyon, July 15, 2026 – A tense evening unfolded in the center of Lyon on Tuesday, July 14th, following the traditional Bastille Day fireworks display and the French national team’s defeat against Spain in the World Cup semi-finals. The simultaneous conclusion of both events led to widespread tensions and violent confrontations across the city.
Clashes Between Youth Groups and Police
As crowds dispersed from the Saône riverbanks towards Bellecour, particularly the metro station, clashes broke out between groups of young people and law enforcement officers. Actu Lyon, present at the scene, reported that individuals launched fireworks into the air, with some deliberately targeting police forces stationed around the square. Mortar fire was also directed at departmental intervention companies and republican security companies, including CRS 83, according to the Rhône prefecture.
Police responded by deploying tear gas multiple times to disperse individuals from Place Bellecour, Rue de la République, and Rue de la Barre. Tear gas was also used in the metro station, which was subsequently closed for the entire evening, in response to the mortar fire. Additionally, several bins were set on fire.
Arrests and Ongoing Operations
By midnight, four individuals had been arrested for throwing projectiles and mortars. One of the suspects was found to be in possession of “incendiary devices,” a security source confirmed. The prefecture tweeted at 1 AM that “operations are continuing, and at-risk groups are systematically dispersed, and perpetrators of violence arrested.”
Shooting Incident in La Guillotière
In addition to the violence in the Presqu’île area, a man was shot around 11 PM in the La Guillotière district (7th arrondissement), just as the France-Spain match was concluding. Two individuals fled the scene on scooters. The victim’s condition and the motives behind the assault remain unknown at this time.
The events of July 14th highlight a night of significant unrest in Lyon, marked by widespread confrontations and a serious act of violence. Authorities are continuing their investigations into the incidents.
