Dramatic Accident on A43: Car Overturns and Catches Fire

Lyon, April 13, 2026 – In the early hours of Sunday, April 12, 2026, a dramatic car accident occurred on the A43 motorway near Saint-Priest, in the direction of Chambéry-Lyon. A vehicle was filmed engulfed in flames after a spectacular rollover, crossing the safety barrier and landing on its roof. The incident took place shortly after midnight.

According to authorities, the three occupants of the vehicle managed to extricate themselves from the car before it became fully engulfed in flames. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported in this accident, which also involved a fire.

Firefighters responded promptly to the scene, extinguishing the blaze and providing emergency care to the occupants, who sustained minor injuries. The exact circumstances leading to the accident are still under investigation.

Road Safety in Rhône: A Concerning Outlook

This incident comes amidst a troubling trend in road safety within the Rhône department. In 2025, the Rhône prefecture recorded 65 fatal accidents on the department’s roads, a significant 25% increase compared to 2024. Nationally, the Observatoire national interministériel de la sécurité routière reported 51,688 accidents across France in 2025.

Analysis of the fatal accidents in Rhône reveals that excessive speed was the cause in 31 cases, while alcohol consumption contributed to 29% of the 65 fatalities. Antoine Guérin, the prefect delegate for defense and security, described this toll as “simply unacceptable.”

Despite these alarming figures, law enforcement agencies conducted over 140,000 checks and screenings in the past year, leading to the withdrawal of 1,627 driving licenses. Prefect Guérin sternly warned that “those who drive after excessive alcohol consumption, who take drugs, or who drive too fast, are potentially murderers.”

This recent accident on the A43 serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in ensuring road safety in the region. Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies.
