Rhône and Lyon Metropolis Under Orange Heatwave Alert: Essential Safety Guide
As of Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 12:00 PM, the Rhône department and Lyon Metropolis have been placed under an orange heatwave alert by Météo-France. This new heatwave episode is expected to last at least until next weekend, with maximum temperatures reaching 37-38°C starting tomorrow. Given that bodies are already fatigued from the previous heatwave, particularly for vulnerable populations, it is crucial to remain vigilant.
Protecting Vulnerable Individuals
Prefect of the region, Étienne GUYOT, in agreement with the city of Lyon, has activated a comprehensive protection system for vulnerable individuals (households and single persons). From tomorrow afternoon, 100 places will be available in two gymnasiums, managed by the Red Cross and the Salvation Army Foundation. Additional places will be mobilized from Wednesday. These facilities will operate from 4:00 PM to 10:00 AM and are accessible only by referral from 115, whose capacities have been reinforced. Direct admissions will not be possible.
This initiative complements the ongoing efforts since the beginning of the heatwave, including increased outreach by the Red Cross, Alynea, and Civil Protection, with a particular focus on water distribution. The opening hours of day centers continue to be extended to provide fragile individuals with additional respite in adapted locations.
Prefect Étienne GUYOT stated, “I will meet with the mayors of Rhône and Lyon Metropolis tomorrow to address all issues that will enable us to effectively manage this new heatwave episode, which will test our citizens, especially the most fragile. State services are already mobilized on all fronts: sheltering, risk of vegetation fires…”
Health Risks and Who is Most Vulnerable
The effects of heat on the body can be rapid, occurring with the first temperature increases. During heatwaves, fragile individuals (the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, infants, children under 4, and isolated persons) are particularly vulnerable to dehydration, worsening chronic conditions, or heatstroke. Effects can also be delayed, leading to abnormal fatigue and aggravation of existing pathologies.
Essential Tips to Stay Safe During the Heatwave
The Prefect of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Prefect of Rhône, and the Regional Health Agency (ARS) Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes remind everyone, especially vulnerable individuals, of the main simple actions to adopt to protect themselves from high temperatures:
- Drink water regularly without waiting until you are thirsty.
- Cool down and wet your body (at least your face and forearms) several times a day.
- Eat enough and do not consume alcohol.
- Avoid going out during the hottest hours and spend several hours a day in a cool place (cinema, public library, supermarket, etc.).
- Avoid sports activities during the hottest hours of the day.
- Keep your home cool (close windows and shutters during the day, open them in the evening and at night if it’s cooler).
- Remember to regularly check in with your loved ones, and do not hesitate to ask for help when needed.
- In case of emergency, call 15 immediately.
Working in High Heat
For Workers:
During periods of high heat, some workers may be particularly exposed to heat-related risks. Drink plenty of water, several times a day. Be vigilant for yourself and your colleagues. Protect your skin from the sun, and if you feel unwell, report it quickly.
For Employers:
Evaluate the risks, make necessary decisions, including adjusting work schedules to limit employees’ exposure to the hottest temperatures of the day and postponing strenuous tasks. In sectors like construction and public works, for example, adapt work sites to ensure the health and safety of your employees.
