Lyon, August 20 – The 2026 edition of the Shanghai Ranking, an annual assessment of the world’s top universities, features two prominent Lyon institutions among the global elite. Université Claude-Bernard Lyon 1 and the École normale supérieure de Lyon have both maintained their strong positions, reaffirming the city’s academic prowess on the international stage.

French Universities’ Performance in the 2026 Shanghai Ranking

The 2026 Shanghai Ranking includes 27 French higher education institutions within the top 1,000 globally, positioning France as the 10th-ranked country worldwide. Four Parisian establishments made it into the top 100, while universities in Strasbourg, Aix-Marseille, Grenoble Alpes, and Montpellier were placed between 101st and 200th.

Lyon’s Universities Shine in the Global Top 400

Université Claude-Bernard Lyon 1 achieved the 9th position among French universities and is ranked internationally between 201st and 300th place. The École normale supérieure de Lyon followed closely, securing the 11th spot nationally and a global ranking between 301st and 400th. This consistent performance for both universities marks a stable presence in the highly competitive global academic landscape.

Lyon, along with Toulouse, stands out as the only French city outside the Paris metropolitan area to have multiple universities referenced in this prestigious ranking. The Paris region itself boasts six institutions within the top tiers.

Historical Context and Ranking Methodology

Since its inception in 2003, the Shanghai Ranking has also recognized other Lyon-based institutions in previous years. Insa Lyon was featured in 2018 (901-1000 places), and Centrale Lyon in 2017 (701-800 places).

The methodology of the Shanghai Ranking, however, remains a subject of debate. Critics often point out that its criteria are particularly tailored to benefit large Anglo-Saxon universities, which consistently dominate the top positions. Indeed, the top ten of the 2026 ranking is largely composed of American (eight institutions) and British (two institutions) universities.

Future Investments and Academic Development

The continued strong performance of Lyon’s universities comes amidst significant investment in the region’s educational infrastructure. A 170 million euro plan is currently underway to transform campuses in both Lyon and Saint-Étienne, aiming to further enhance the learning and research environment for students and faculty.

This sustained recognition in global rankings, coupled with strategic investments, underscores Lyon’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and high-quality higher education ecosystem, attracting talent and contributing to scientific advancement.
