Following a partial solar eclipse on August 12 and an impressive meteor shower, Lyon is once again preparing for a celestial event. A partial lunar eclipse, with a 90% coverage, will be visible in the skies above the city during the night of Thursday, August 27, to Friday, August 28.
Understanding the Lunar Eclipse Phenomenon
Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth positions itself directly between the Moon and the Sun. This alignment prevents the Sun’s rays from directly illuminating the Moon, instead casting the Earth’s luminosity upon it. This particular eclipse will be partial, meaning only a portion of the Moon will be obscured.
No Special Equipment Needed, But Binoculars Recommended
For this lunar event, there is no need for special protective eyewear, a contrast to the recent solar eclipse. In fact, for an enhanced viewing experience, the use of binoculars is recommended. This allows for a clearer observation of the lunar surface during the eclipse.
Optimal Viewing Times and Locations in Lyon
While the eclipse will be particularly well observable from the west and southwest of France, residents of Lyon and the Rhône region will also have a good view. The phenomenon is expected to begin around 4:30 AM, reaching its peak around 6:00 AM. For the best vantage point, the heights of the Monts du Lyonnais are suggested, as the Moon will be low in the sky during this period.
