LYON, September 7, 2026 – The Gerland district in Lyon’s 7th arrondissement is experiencing a worrying surge in insecurity after a man was seriously injured in a shooting early Sunday morning. The incident, which occurred just days after a fatal stabbing in the same area, has intensified calls from residents and local officials for urgent action.
Early Morning Shooting Leaves One Seriously Injured
According to initial reports, gunshots were heard shortly before 5:00 AM on Rue Jonas Salk, near the Parc des Berges du Rhône and the Halle Tony-Garnier. Police, including the anti-crime brigade, were immediately dispatched to the scene. They discovered a man who had sustained at least one gunshot wound to the hand. The victim was in serious condition and was transported to the hospital by firefighters and Samu 69. Fortunately, his life is not believed to be in danger.
Police sources suggest the shooting may be linked to a violent brawl involving a dozen people that took place shortly before, as nightclubs were closing. Investigators from the interdepartmental directorate of national police (DIPN) of the Rhône are actively searching for the shooter or shooters, who fled the scene before police arrived. Two men are currently being tracked in connection with the incident.

Adding to the district’s woes, the owner of L’Argenson restaurant reported on social media that a bullet had shattered a window of his establishment during the night of Saturday, September 5, to Sunday, September 6. While it is unclear if this incident is directly related to the shooting, it underscores the growing sense of vulnerability among local businesses and residents.
Frédéric Guerra, the owner of L’Argenson, expressed his dismay, stating, “The problem goes far beyond my restaurant. It’s an entire neighborhood that is becoming unlivable.” He highlighted the pervasive issues of prostitution, drug trafficking, and violent clashes that have become commonplace in the area, particularly along Allée Pierre-de-Coubertin. “Gerland cannot become an abandoned zone where everyone imposes their own law,” Guerra emphasized.
Recent Fatal Stabbing Fuels Community Outrage
This latest act of violence comes less than a week after a man was fatally stabbed in the throat near the TCL Stade de Gerland metro station, less than 400 meters from the restaurant. That incident, which occurred on the night of Monday, September 1, saw the victim engaged in a street confrontation before being attacked. The assailant was quickly apprehended by police and is currently in pre-trial detention.
Local Officials Call for Increased Security Measures
Fanny Dubot, the Green Party mayor of the 7th arrondissement, has publicly called for a dedicated police brigade for the Gerland district and the establishment of supervised drug consumption rooms to address the complex issues contributing to the area’s decline.
