Lyon, France – The Modulo, a prominent barge restaurant situated on the banks of the Rhône, is scheduled for a significant transformation with the arrival of a new, “next-generation” floating restaurant-brasserie in early June 2026. This development marks a new chapter for the popular Lyonnaise establishment, promising an enhanced dining experience and a versatile event space.
A New Era for Floating Dining in Lyon
The new Modulo, the result of three years of design and over a year of construction between Belgium and France, will solidify its status as Lyon’s sole floating restaurant, distinguishing itself from existing bars, nightclubs, and cruise services. The new structure will occupy the same prime location, extending across three levels and featuring 400 square meters of covered terrace space.
A “high-end” brasserie concept will take over the premises, offering continuous culinary service from morning to evening, 365 days a year. According to the developers, the new Modulo is designed to be “larger, more modern, and open all year round,” emphasizing its commitment to providing a consistent and high-quality experience.
Versatility and Modern Amenities
The new Modulo is lauded for its “size, versatility, and equipment,” positioning itself as a “true hybrid living space, at the crossroads of catering, events, and daily uses.” This multi-functional design aims to cater to a diverse clientele, from casual diners to corporate event organizers.
The lower deck, or hull, will house modular meeting rooms capable of accommodating up to 60 people, along with storage areas and restrooms. These spaces are described as “professional and discreet, ideal for seminars and confidential meetings.”
The ground floor will serve as the “living heart of the Modulo,” featuring a 100-square-meter professional kitchen, a 160-square-meter air-conditioned indoor dining area, a spacious covered terrace on the front deck, and a primary bar.
Finally, the rooftop will offer 300 square meters of open space and dining, complete with a second bar, providing panoramic views of the Rhône. In total, the new Modulo will boast 400 seated places and a maximum capacity of 500 standing places.
Commitment to Sustainability and Events
Beyond its culinary and event offerings, the new Modulo will be equipped with a comprehensive sound system for organizing events and parties, underscoring its role as a dynamic social hub. Furthermore, the entire vessel will incorporate a wastewater treatment system, reflecting an “ecological commitment” in its operations.
The current Modulo barge, a familiar sight on the Rhône, will undergo this significant transformation, with the new floating restaurant poised to become a landmark destination in Lyon’s vibrant culinary and entertainment scene.
This initiative aligns with Lyon’s ongoing efforts to enhance its urban landscape and provide innovative spaces for residents and visitors alike. The arrival of the new Modulo is anticipated to further enrich the city’s unique charm and appeal.
