Albigny-sur-Saône, June 2 – The discovery of a man’s body in the Saône River on Monday, June 1, has prompted a suspicious death investigation by authorities in Lyon. A kayaker made the grim find at approximately 7:30 PM near Albigny-sur-Saône, north of the city, and immediately alerted emergency services.

Body Found Chained to a Stone

According to initial reports from local police, the victim was found submerged and notably, was attached to a stone by a chain. This detail immediately raised suspicions, leading to the issuance of a certificate of suspicious death.

Sapeurs-pompiers (firefighters) and gendarmes from the Rhône department swiftly responded to the scene. Divers were deployed to recover the body from the river. The Lyon public prosecutor’s office has ordered forensic medical examinations to determine the exact cause of death.

Investigation Underway, Suicide Not Ruled Out

Thierry Dran, the Lyon prosecutor, visited the site and informed AFP that while the circumstances are suspicious, the man’s death is currently considered “compatible with a suicide.” However, a thorough investigation is being conducted to ascertain all facts surrounding the incident.

The inquiry has been entrusted to the gendarmes of the Lyon research brigade. Authorities are meticulously examining the scene and gathering evidence to shed light on how the man ended up in the river and the nature of his death.

The incident has drawn significant attention in the local community, with residents awaiting further details from the ongoing investigation. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.

Context of Similar Incidents

While specific details are still emerging, such discoveries in waterways often lead to complex investigations involving multiple agencies. The presence of the chain and stone suggests a deliberate act, whether by the deceased or another party, which the forensic examination aims to clarify.

The Saône River, a major waterway, has occasionally been the site of unfortunate incidents. However, the specific details of this discovery mark it as particularly unusual and warranting extensive police and judicial scrutiny.

Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation. Further updates are expected as the forensic examinations and police inquiries progress.

The focus of the investigation remains on understanding the sequence of events that led to this tragic discovery and determining whether foul play was involved or if it was indeed a case of suicide under unusual circumstances.

The community of Albigny-sur-Saône and the wider Lyon area are closely following the developments of this case, hoping for clarity and answers regarding the mysterious death in the Saône River.
