Police Chase on A7 After Scooter Driver Refuses to Comply in Saint-Fons
Lyon, July 20 – A routine identity check in Saint-Fons escalated into a high-speed pursuit on the A7 motorway yesterday evening, Sunday, July 19. A scooter driver, refusing to cooperate with police, led officers on a dangerous 10-kilometer chase that endangered other road users.
The incident began around 7 PM on Rue des Deux-Fermes in Saint-Fons when a police patrol attempted to stop a man on a scooter for a control. Instead of complying, the suspect immediately fled, heading towards the A7 motorway. This initiated a pursuit involving multiple police units.
Dangerous Maneuvers on the Motorway
According to initial reports, the scooter driver displayed extremely reckless behavior during the chase. He was observed weaving dangerously between vehicles, forcing other drivers to brake sharply or swerve to avoid collisions. This put numerous motorists at significant risk on the busy motorway.
The pursuit continued for approximately 10 kilometers before the fleeing driver eventually lost control of his vehicle. The scooter collided with a private garage, bringing the motorized part of the chase to an end. However, the suspect was not immediately subdued.
Attempted Escape on Foot and Arrest
Following the crash, the individual attempted to continue his escape on foot. His efforts were short-lived, as police officers, who had been in close pursuit, were able to apprehend him a short distance from the crash site. The arrest concluded the tense standoff.
A judicial source confirmed that the arrested suspect is a French national and does not possess a valid driving license. The officer sustained injuries, resulting in a four-day temporary incapacity for work (ITT).
After being struck, the officer drew his service weapon and fired, though without hitting the driver. This led to another significant pursuit through the streets of Lyon, culminating in a difficult arrest. The actions of the police in that incident were subsequently commended by the Prefect of Rhône, Étienne Guyot, underscoring the gravity and frequency of such dangerous encounters in the region.
